A technician tests the base of a double-door fridge with a multimeter

In a lot of Randburg kitchens, the fridge has been fitted into a gap that was measured for an older, smaller model. In the townhouses of Northriding and Randpark Ridge and the flats of Windsor and Robindale, it's often wedged between cupboards with a shelf above it. A fridge can live like that, but it has to work harder to get rid of its heat, and over time that shows up as a fridge that runs all the time, can't keep cold on a hot day, or wears out its fan and compressor early.

When yours stops cooling, starts leaking or makes a new noise, the technician comes to you, tests it where it stands, and tells you what's wrong and what the repair will cost before any work starts.

Before you book, our guide to a fridge not cooling has a few safe checks that sometimes solve it.

Fridge faults we fix in Randburg

  • Can't keep cold on hot days

A fridge boxed in tightly, with dusty coils or a weak condenser fan, struggles when the kitchen warms up. It may cope in the morning and lose the battle by afternoon.

  • Running all the time

Poor ventilation, a worn door seal, a faulty thermostat or low gas keeps the compressor running without a break, and the electricity bill shows it.

  • Humming or buzzing at night

A fan motor with a worn bearing, a compressor relay that buzzes, or a fridge that isn't level and vibrates against the cupboards around it.

  • Fridge section warm

In a fridge-freezer, a blocked vent, a stopped fan or an iced-up evaporator keeps cold air from reaching the fridge while the freezer stays cold.

  • Water under the fridge

A blocked defrost drain, a cracked drip tray at the back, or on fridges with a water dispenser, a split water line.

  • Door not closing properly

Heavy bottles in the door shelves, a fridge leaning forward, or a hinge that has dropped. A door that doesn't seal lets in warm air and builds frost.

  • Clicking but not starting

A click every few minutes with no hum after it usually means the compressor is trying to start and failing. The start relay is the first suspect.

Give your fridge room to breathe

Every fridge pumps the heat from inside the cabinet out through the condenser, usually at the back or underneath. If the back is pressed against the wall and the sides are boxed in by cupboards, the heat has nowhere to go. The manual gives the gap your model needs. As a rule of thumb, leave a few centimetres at the back and sides and keep the top clear.

Vacuum the coils at the back or behind the kick plate every few months, with the fridge switched off. It takes ten minutes and takes a lot of strain off the compressor.

A noisy fridge in a townhouse

Some noise is normal: the hum of the compressor, a gurgle as refrigerant moves, the odd click from the thermostat, and a crackle as the cooling plate warms and cools. A fridge that buzzes loudly, rattles, grinds or clicks repeatedly without starting is telling you something.

Check that it's level and not touching the cupboards on either side. If the noise is still there, the fan motors and the compressor relay are the usual sources, and both can be replaced.

Fridge-freezers and the vent between them

In most fridge-freezers, the fridge has no cooling plate of its own. Cold air is blown up from the freezer through a vent, usually at the top of the back wall, and a damper controls how much comes through. Pack food tightly against that vent and the fridge warms up while the freezer stays frozen. Leave a little space around it, and if the fridge is still warm, the fan, the damper or a defrost fault needs a look.

Fridge repairs in Randburg: your questions

Why does my fridge struggle on hot afternoons?

It probably can't get rid of its heat fast enough. Check the gap around it, clean the coils and make sure nothing blocks the vents. If it still struggles, the condenser fan or the gas charge may be the problem.

Is it normal for my fridge to make noise?

A steady hum, gurgles and the odd click are normal. Loud buzzing, rattling, grinding or repeated clicking without the compressor starting are not.

Can my fridge be built into a cupboard gap?

Only if the gap leaves the space your model needs for ventilation, which the manual lists. A freestanding fridge squeezed into a tight gap runs hotter and wears faster.

Can you repair a fridge that's built into the kitchen units?

Yes. Most repairs are done with the fridge in place. If it has to come out, the technician slides it out carefully, and checks there's enough ventilation when it goes back.

Should I switch my fridge off at night to save power?

No. Switching a fridge off and on regularly makes it work harder to pull back down to temperature, and food warms up in between. A well-ventilated fridge with clean coils and a good seal is the best way to keep the running cost down.

What does a fridge repair cost in Randburg?

Some fixes are free: clean coils and more space around the fridge. A fan, a seal or a thermostat is a modest repair, and a compressor is the expensive one. The technician prices it before any work starts.
