What to do right now
Safety first. If you smell burning, see sparks or smoke, or water is near a plug, switch the appliance off at the wall or at its isolator switch before anything else. If there's a fire, get everyone out and call the emergency services.
Washing machine leaking or flooding
Switch it off at the wall and close the tap that feeds it. On a front loader with a full drum, leave the door shut. Lay towels down and keep the floor around plugs dry.
Fridge or freezer stopped
Keep the doors closed to hold the cold in. Check the plug and the circuit breaker first: a tripped breaker after a power cut is common. Move the most perishable food to a cooler box with ice. See fridge not cooling for more checks.
Stove sparking, smoking or tripping the power
Switch the stove off at its isolator (the large switch on the wall near the stove) and leave it off. Don't keep resetting the breaker.
Tumble dryer smells like burning
Stop the cycle, switch it off at the wall and leave the door shut while it cools. Don't restart it until it has been checked. Lint build-up in the filter or the vent is a common cause.
Dishwasher leaking
Switch it off at the wall and turn off its water supply, usually a tap under the sink. Mop up the water and leave the door closed.

Can you come today?
Typically at your door within 60 minutes for same-day bookings. Get in touch as early as you can and tell us it's urgent: on the form, switch on "It's urgent", or say so in your WhatsApp message.
How long will food last in a fridge that has stopped?
Keep the doors shut. A closed fridge stays cold for a few hours, and a full, closed freezer for longer. Move milk, meat and medicines to a cooler box with ice if you have one. If food has been warm for a long time, throw it out rather than risk it.
My stove trips the electricity. Is it safe to keep resetting it?
No. A stove that keeps tripping the circuit breaker or earth leakage usually has a fault to earth, often in a plate, an element or the wiring. Leave the stove switched off at its isolator and don't use it until it has been checked.
Water is pouring out of my washing machine. What do I do?
Switch it off at the wall plug and turn off the tap behind or next to the machine. Mop up and keep children and pets away from water near plugs. On a front loader with a full drum, leave the door shut: the water will come out with it.
