A fridge that stops cooling turns into a problem fast. In a city flat, there's rarely a second fridge or a garage freezer to move things into, and in a busy family home in the south, there's a week's shopping at stake. The first thing to do is keep the door closed. A closed fridge holds its cold for a few hours, and every opening lets it out.
This page covers the city itself and the southern suburbs, from the apartment blocks of the CBD and Braamfontein and the older homes of Parktown and Melville to Rosettenville, Turffontein, Mondeor, Glenvista, Southgate and Mulbarton. We repair single-door fridges, fridge-freezers, double-door and side-by-side models, and the bar fridges and small fridges that live in flats and student rooms.
If a small fridge isn't worth repairing, the technician will say so.

Fridge faults we fix in Johannesburg
Running but not cold
The light is on and you can hear it, but the inside is warm. A failed fan, an iced-up cooling plate from a defrost fault, dirty condenser coils or a compressor that won't start are the usual causes. See fridge not cooling for safe checks first.
Bar fridge not cooling
Small fridges often have a simple thermostat and compressor, or a cooling plate at the top that ices over. A thermostat or a start relay is a quick repair. If the compressor itself has gone on a very small fridge, replacing may be better value.
Water pooling at the bottom
Melt water from the cooling plate runs down a channel into a small drain hole. When the hole blocks with crumbs or ice, the water collects at the bottom of the fridge and spills out of the door.
Ice on the back wall
Some frost on the back wall of a static fridge is normal. A thick sheet of ice, or ice in a frost-free fridge, means a defrost fault or a door that isn't sealing.
Tripping the plug point
A fridge that trips the earth leakage may have a damp defrost heater, damaged wiring or a compressor fault. In older homes, the plug point itself is worth checking too.
Bar fridge not cold
Small bar fridges in student rooms often have no fan and a single dial. If yours is warm, check the dial hasn't been knocked to its lowest setting and that the back isn't pushed against the wall.
Keeping food safe while you wait
While you wait for the technician:
- Keep the fridge and freezer doors shut as much as you can.
- Move milk, meat, fish and medicines to a cooler box with ice, or to a neighbour's fridge.
- Put a glass of water on the middle shelf. If it feels warm when the technician arrives, tell them.
- When in doubt about food that has been warm for hours, throw it out.
Fridges in flats
In a small kitchen, a fridge is often boxed in tight between cupboards, with no room at the back or sides. That makes it run hot and long, and it wears the compressor and the fan. If you can, leave a few centimetres of space around it, especially at the back where the condenser gets rid of heat.
For the visit, tell us about access control, parking and which floor you're on. The technician may need to pull the fridge forward to reach the back, so clear the floor in front of it.
A fridge that keeps cutting out
In older houses in Parktown, Melville and the south, a fridge that keeps switching itself off may be on a tired plug point, or on a circuit it shares with other heavy appliances. Try it on a different socket for a day. If it still cuts out there, the fault is in the fridge itself, and that's one for the technician.
After you book
Once you've booked, we confirm the visit with you. Typically at your door within 60 minutes for same-day bookings. Track your technician live: when they leave, you get a live tracking link on your phone.
No call-out fee when we repair it.If no repair is done, a R500 call-out applies. The technician finds the fault and explains the repair before any work starts, so you decide whether to go ahead.
Book a repairFridge repairs in Johannesburg: your questions
Do you repair bar fridges and small fridges?
Yes. Thermostats, relays and door seals on small fridges are affordable repairs. If the compressor has failed on a very small fridge, the technician will tell you if replacing makes more sense.
Can I plug my fridge into an extension cord?
It's better not to. A fridge draws a surge each time the compressor starts, and a long or thin extension cord can overheat or drop the voltage, which is hard on the compressor. Plug it straight into a wall socket, and if there isn't one where the fridge stands, ask an electrician to add one.
Where can I get my refrigerator repaired in Johannesburg?
At home. A technician comes to you in the city or Johannesburg South and repairs the fridge where it stands.
How much does it cost to fix a fridge in Johannesburg?
Most fridge repairs in flats and older homes come down to a thermostat, a relay or a door seal, which are at the cheaper end. A fan or a defrost part is a step up, and a compressor or a gas leak the most. You hear the part and the price, then decide.
