The freestanding electric stove, with four solid plates on top and an oven underneath, is still the heart of many Johannesburg kitchens, from Melville cottages to family homes in Mondeor and Mulbarton. It's a simple, tough appliance, and almost everything on it can be repaired: the plates, the switches that control them, the oven element, the thermostat and the wiring.
In older homes, the stove's own wiring and its connection to the wall are part of the picture too. The cable from the isolator, the terminal block at the back of the stove and the connections to each plate carry a lot of current, and with age they can loosen, overheat and burn. The technician checks the stove and its connections, finds the fault, and tells you what the repair involves and what it will cost before any work starts.

Stove or oven faults we fix in Johannesburg
Solid plate stopped heating
A solid plate burns out after long service, or its connection at the back works loose. Plates come in standard sizes and ratings, and a matching one is fitted in place.
Plate only works on high
The switch for that plate has failed, so it's either fully on or off. Switch the stove off at the isolator, and use the other plates until it's fixed.
Burnt smell or scorch marks at the back
An overheating connection at the terminal block or a plate. Switch off at the isolator immediately. Burnt terminals and wiring are replaced, and the connection made good.
Trips the electricity
Moisture in an old element, a plate breaking down, or damaged wiring causes a fault to earth. Leave the stove off and don't keep resetting the breaker.
Oven cold, plates fine
The oven element, the oven thermostat or the oven switch has failed. The plates and the oven are wired separately, so one can fail without the other.
Indicator light on, nothing heating
The light shows power reaching the stove, but the switch, the thermostat or an internal connection isn't passing it on.
Oven door won't stay shut
A broken hinge spring or a worn hinge lets the door drop open. Heat escapes and the oven never reaches temperature.
Older stoves and their wiring
A four-plate stove with the oven on can draw a lot of current. It's supplied through its own isolator switch on the wall, a heavy cable, and a terminal block at the back of the stove where the cable connects. In older homes, any of these can be very old.
Loose connections heat up. Over months, a loose terminal can scorch the block and burn the wire insulation, and the first sign is often a hot smell from behind the stove or a plate that works on and off. If you notice either, switch off at the isolator and book. The technician checks the connections at the stove. If the problem is in the house wiring or the isolator itself, they'll tell you, so you know to call an electrician.
Solid plates
Solid plates are cast-iron discs with the heating element sealed inside. They're tough, but once a plate burns out, it's replaced as a whole. It must match the size and the power rating of the original, so a photo of the stove's model sticker helps the technician bring the right part.
Don't leave a plate on high with nothing on it for long, don't pour cold water on a hot plate, and don't let pots boil over into the plate's rim. All three shorten a plate's life.

Book a repairStove & oven repairs in Johannesburg: your questions
My stove smells like burning plastic at the back. What should I do?
Switch it off at the isolator straight away and don't use it. A connection is overheating, usually at the terminal block. Book a technician to check it.
Can one stove plate be replaced?
Yes. Plates are replaced individually with one that matches the size and rating. The switch that controls it can also be replaced if that's the fault.
Do you repair stoves in Johannesburg South?
Yes. Rosettenville, Turffontein, Mondeor, Glenvista, Southgate and Mulbarton are all covered, along with the CBD, Braamfontein, Parktown and Melville. Plates, switches, elements and wiring are repaired at your home.
What does the light on my stove switch mean?
It shows the switch is sending power to the plate or the oven. If the light is on but nothing heats, the switch is doing its job and the element, or its connection, has failed. Switch off at the isolator and book a technician.
How do I know if my stove isolator is on?
The isolator is the large switch on the wall near the stove, often with a small light. If the stove is dead, check that switch first, then the breaker in your distribution board.
What does a stove repair cost?
A plate or a plate switch is a modest repair. An oven element or a thermostat costs a little more. Burnt terminals and wiring depend on how far the damage goes. You'll know the price before any work starts.
