Germiston has a lot of established homes, and in an older house the washing machine is often plumbed into a laundry that was set up long before modern front loaders. The standpipe may be too short or too tall, the drain may run to an outside gully that collects leaves and lint, and the tap may be stiff from years of use. All of that affects how a machine fills and drains, and a technician who checks the setup as well as the machine finds the real cause sooner.
The machine itself has its own list of faults, from a clogged pump filter to a worn door seal, and the technician works through them at your home. You hear what's wrong and what the repair will cost before any work starts.
If water is sitting in the drum right now, our guide shows how to drain it safely through the filter.

Washing machine faults we fix in Germiston
Draining slowly
A part-blocked pump filter, a drain hose with a kink or a sag full of lint, or a standpipe or outside gully that's clogging up. If the water backs up out of the standpipe, the house drain is the problem, not the machine.
Water siphoning out
If the machine never seems to fill properly and water trickles away during the wash, the drain hose may be pushed too far down a standpipe, or the standpipe is too short. The water siphons out as fast as it comes in.
Musty smell
Detergent and softener residue, lint and low-temperature washes let a grey film build up in the door seal, the drum and the drawer. The smell gets into the clothes.
Black marks on the door seal
Mould grows in the fold of the seal when it stays damp. Cleaning it helps, but a seal that's badly stained or split is better replaced.
Stiff or leaking tap
An old tap may not open fully, so the machine fills slowly and shows a fill error, or it may drip at the hose joint. A new washer or tap sorts it, and the inlet screen on the machine is cleaned at the same time.
Not spinning
A machine won't spin while it senses water in the drum, so a slow drain often shows up as a spin problem. Belts and motor brushes are the other usual causes. See washing machine not spinning.
Older laundries and the drain
A washing machine drain hose should hook into a standpipe that's high enough to stop siphoning but low enough for the pump to reach, with a gap around the hose so air can get in. In older laundries, standpipes are sometimes too short, too narrow or sealed around the hose with tape, and each of those causes trouble.
Outside, the drain often empties into a gully. Lint from every wash collects there and, together with leaves, can block it. If water backs up into the laundry or bubbles out of the gully when the machine drains, clear the gully or call a plumber. If the house drain is clear and the machine still won't empty, it's the machine, and that's where we come in.
Getting rid of smells
A smelly machine is usually a habit problem, not a broken one. To fix it:
- Run an empty hot wash, at the hottest setting, once a month.
- Use the right amount of detergent and go easy on softener.
- Wipe the door seal dry after the last wash of the day, including inside the fold.
- Leave the door and the detergent drawer slightly open between washes.
- Clean the pump filter, where old water and lint sit between washes.
After you book
Once you've booked, we confirm the visit with you. Typically at your door within 60 minutes for same-day bookings. Track your technician live: when they leave, you get a live tracking link on your phone.
The technician runs the machine, watches how it fills and drains, and checks the hoses, the tap and the standpipe as well as the machine. Then they explain the fault and the price before any work starts.
No call-out fee when we repair it.If no repair is done, a R500 call-out applies. The technician finds the fault and explains the repair before any work starts, so you decide whether to go ahead.
Book a repairWashing machine repairs in Germiston: your questions
Why does my washing machine smell bad?
Usually a build-up of detergent, softener and lint in the door seal, the drum and the pump filter. A monthly hot wash with the drum empty, a clean filter and leaving the door ajar between washes usually cures it.
Water comes out of the standpipe when my machine drains. Is the machine broken?
Probably not. Water backing up out of the standpipe means the drain beyond it is blocked or too small. Clear the drain or the outside gully, or call a plumber.
Why is my washing machine always half empty during the wash?
It may be siphoning: the drain hose is too far down the standpipe or the standpipe is too short, so water runs out as it fills. Pulling the hose up and securing it often fixes it.
How do I stop my washing machine door seal going mouldy?
Wipe the seal dry after the last wash of the day, including inside the fold, and leave the door ajar. Run an empty hot wash once a month and go easy on fabric softener.
What does a washing machine repair cost in Germiston?
A stiff tap, a short standpipe or a slipped hose is quick to put right. A drain pump or a new door seal costs more. If the fault is in the house drain, the technician tells you, so you don't pay for a machine repair you don't need.
