Appliance parts on a workbench: a drain pump, a heating element, a door seal, a thermostat and a multimeter

Smeg is an Italian brand, and its appliances are often chosen as much for how they look as for how they work: the rounded retro-style fridges in bright colours, range cookers, and built-in ovens and dishwashers. When an appliance like that develops a fault, replacing it isn't the obvious answer. Most of the time, the fault is in a part that can be replaced, and the appliance keeps its place in the kitchen.

We're an independent repair business, not a Smeg service centre. If your appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact Smeg or the shop where you bought it first. Once it's out of warranty, the technician comes to you, finds the fault where the appliance stands, and tells you what the repair will cost before any work starts.

Smeg ovens and cookers

Smeg ovens and range cookers come down to the usual oven parts: elements, fan motors, thermostats, selector switches, door seals and hinges. On electric hobs, each zone has its own element and switch. If the oven won't heat, try our oven not heating checks first. See oven repairs and stove repairs.

Smeg retro fridges and dishwashers

Retro-style fridges have the same insides as other fridges: a thermostat, a compressor and its relay, a cooling plate or fan, and a door seal. A seal or thermostat repair is far better value than replacing a fridge you chose for its looks. Smeg dishwashers usually need a drain pump, an inlet valve, a heater or a door seal. See fridge repairs and dishwasher repairs.

Looking after a Smeg

Keep oven cleaner off the door seals and the fan cover, wipe up spills once the oven has cooled, and close the oven door gently so the hinges last. On a retro fridge, clean the door seal with warm soapy water now and then, and leave space behind it so it can breathe. Small habits like these keep the parts that wear first in good shape for longer.

No call-out fee when we repair it.If no repair is done, a R500 call-out applies. The technician finds the fault and explains the repair before any work starts, so you decide whether to go ahead.

Smeg repair questions

How do I reset my Smeg oven?

Switch it off at the isolator for a few minutes, then on again. If the display flashes, set the time: on many Smeg ovens with a programmer, the oven won't heat until the clock is set. If it shows an error code or still won't heat, note the model number from the plate around the door frame and book a technician.

Why is my Smeg oven not working after a power outage?

Most likely the clock is waiting to be set. After a power cut, many Smeg ovens show a flashing time and won't heat until you set it; the manual for your model shows the buttons. If that doesn't help, check the isolator and the DB board. A surge can also damage the programmer or the control board: book a technician.

Why is my Smeg dishwasher not starting?

Check that the door is closed firmly, the tap is open and the power is on at the plug or isolator. A dishwasher won't start on a delay timer or with a child lock on, so check the display too. If it still won't start, the door switch, the inlet valve or the control board needs a technician: book one.

What is the life expectancy of a Smeg oven?

There's no fixed figure: it depends on the model and how it's used and looked after. Ovens are built around parts that wear and can be replaced, like elements, thermostats, seals and fan motors, so a well-kept Smeg can keep going for a long time with repairs. Try our repair or replace check.

Can you repair a Smeg retro fridge?

Yes. Thermostats, relays, fans, door seals and defrost parts can all be replaced, so the fridge keeps its looks and its place.

Are you a Smeg service centre?

No. We're an independent repairer working on Smeg appliances once they're out of warranty.

Smeg is a trademark of its owner. pink ideas repairs is an independent repair business, not an authorised agent or service centre for Smeg. If your appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, contact the manufacturer or the shop you bought it from first.
